Kielder Duathlon - 6 December 201530th July 2015
Starting and finishing at Kielder Castle, the event consists of a 7km trail run followed by a 20km mountain bike, incorporating the new blue graded bike trail, finishing with a final 6km trail run. Due to the time of year both runs will be staying fairly low on a good mix of forest tracks and woodland trails. The run routes are not too hilly or steep.
The first run heads out of the Castle gates following the forest tracks to Ravenshill. This leads onto a steady climb part way up to Deadwater Fell followed by a short descent down the open fellside, returning back into the forest and to T1 at the Castle.
The second run follows the course of the old railway line, initially crossing kielder Viaduct, then runs parallel to Bakethin reservoir nature reserve, keeping fairly flat for the first few kilometres. A steady climb on forest tracks turns into woodland singletrack to the bridge at Kielder Burn, leading back to the castle.
The mountain bike section incorporates the new Blue graded trail, which is a superb flowing trail and gives you some of the great vistas Kielder has to offer. It is an undulating route with few technical aspects such as drop offs or rocks, so it is suitable for the less experienced riders and those not wanting a too tough and technical route.
