Around Kielder Water & Forest
Kielder Water and Forest Park is perfect for individuals and families who enjoy nature, water sports, exploring, cycling and much more. The Lakeside path is a 26 mile multi-user trail suitable for walkers, cyclists wheelchair users and horse riders that travels all the way around Kielder Water. At the wonderful Leaplish facility you can visit the Bird of Prey Centre, containing a large and fascinating collection of Birds of Prey in the North of England. The centre is open throughout the year and visitors can observe the birds flying in this spectacular habitat. Also at Leaplish is a small swimming pool, children’s adventure play park, mini golf course and refreshments available at the Boat Inn bar restaurant. In December, Leaplish is transformed into a Winter Wonderland with a skating rink, Santa’s elves workshop, a Christmas theatre show and a visit to Santa’s secret hideaway.
Northumberland is a wonderfully remote county of England, situated in the far north of the country.
Stretching from the Scottish Borders to Hadrian’s Wall the county of Northumberland offers many fabulous places to visit including historical houses such as Alnwick Castle and Bamborough Castle, You could plan a visit to Holy Island, the birthplace of the 8th Century Lindisfarne Gospels. Along the 84 miles of Hadrian’s Wall there are many archaeological sites to explore.
Kielder Forest Park is the home of around 50% of England’s native red squirrel. Also since 2009 a pair of osprey have returned each year to successfully raise chicks in Northumberland. Explorers can also expect to see roe deer, badgers, otters, shrews, seven species of bats and a variety of woodland birds.
There are many wildlife events throughout the year such as pond dipping, deer safaris, mini-beast hunts, family nature walks and bat nights. You could also visit Kielder Water Birds of Prey Centre, where you can see one of the largest & most fascinating collection of birds in the north of England.
Kielder Observatory is a wonderful resource, located only 8 miles from Kielder Cottage. It is located in the heart of Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. At Kielder Observatory you can learn more about passing comets, shooting stars and the Milky Way etc from experienced astronomers and with the use of powerful telescopes. Since the Observatory opened in 2008 it has attracted approximately 30,000 visitors.
For fans of golf, Bellingham Golf Club is a highly regarded 18 hole golf cours situated between Hadrians Wall and the Scottish border.
Northumbrian Water trout fisheries in the north east of England has built up an excellent reputation for offering top quality fishing. The lake offers opportunities to fish for both the enthusiast and competition anglers alike. With a shoreline of approximately 20 miles bank anglers are spoilt for choice. Fishing permits can be obtained from Leaplish or Tower Knowe Visitor Centres.
You could also explore the area by bike, there are many cycle paths that you can take advantage of with your own bike or a rental bike from The Bike Place.
